Our Story

How it all started...

In 1916, a group of believers felt the need for a Pentecostal church in the community surrounding the mill. As a result, the Utica-Mohawk Church of God was organized. With World War 1, a flu epidemic and the approaching Great Depression, the church disbanded in 1926 due to unavailable pastors and lack of funds. However, local cottage prayer meetings were held in different homes for several years by those still feeling the need to continue to try and build a congregation.

In 1931, these faithful and dedicated servants of the Lord who knew that God had placed a burden in their hearts for reaching out to their community reorganized the Utica-Mohawk Church of God. Rev. Adgar Harris was appointed as the first pastor of the church. He would travel from his home in Liberty by horse and buggy to a home on Powell Street Extension that served as the sanctuary.

In 1936, Rev. Roy Patterson became pastor and quickly oversaw the construction of a white wood framed sanctuary on East Main Street, which was completed in 1937. This structure currently houses our children and youth ministries. The church’s name was then changed to East Main Street Church of God to better represent its new location.

In 1952, under the leadership of Rev. J.A. Whitlow, more construction and renovations occurred. The white wood framed sanctuary was raised in order for Sunday School classes to be built underneath. It was at this time that the entire building received a new brick exterior. The congregation worshiped in this building until our current sanctuary was constructed in 1976 under the leadership of Rev. J.W. Terry.

In the early 2000’s, the name of the church was changed to Seneca Church of God in order to represent its outreach beyond the mill village and into the city of Seneca and all of Oconee County.

Times have changed, people have changed, but the Seneca Church of God continues the vision of those early faithful believers as we endeavor to reach our community and surrounding area for the Kingdom of God. We believe that the best is yet to come!
